I can almost understand people with cameras in their house, but I am totally against recording the SOUND! Besides the fact that it is illegal (yes! illegal) in the state of Califonia to record sound, I think it's just plain rude and it gives a nanny 0 privacy at work at all times! But like you said, if you have to watch your nanny, than it's maybe better not to leave her alone with your kids at all...

I think that you are better safe than sorry, even if it means installing a nanny cam. As a nanny I don't mind it at all - I don't have anything to hide! Besides, we are talking about the safty and well being of a child. You can never be too careful. (My girlfriend tells me that if I ever have a kid, he will be the boy in a bubble!) But I am just used to being over protective when it comes to some one elses kids.

If trust is an issue when first hiring a nanny maybe use a nanny cam for the first month to 6 months or so... With her knowledge. But after reviewing the footage, you can probably make a good guess of who your nanny is. As a nanny I would hate to be recorded and not know it...especially with sound! what if I accidentally pass gas? what If I like singing to myself in a nasal tone when i think no one else is listening- what if I like doing michael jackson dances too? People have the right to a certain level of privacy...If you are going to use a nanny cam, you should tell the nanny, because she has the right to know, and she is learning to trust you as a family as well. Set up the camera only in kid friendly areas such as their bedroom or their playroom. Don't do it in every room of the house! If I found I was being secretly videotaped at work I can tell you I would quit almost immediately. The fact that I am not trusted would bother me- and I would feel violated as well. Even though I have nothing to hide...the family needs to respect me as both a professional and as a family member.
