Of course every parent has a choice when it comes to the television, as they are in complete control, or at least they are suppose to be, however when we look at articles such as this one (click on title for link), I wonder if parents realize all the other choices they have instead of using the TV as a nanny/babysitter? Boy this one really got me irritated!
Here is a little blurb from the article...
"The truth is, I'm not crazy about all the TV watching in my house — whether it's Jillian or my husband in front of the screen. But I sacrifice to the TV gods in exchange for a work-from-home job, one that lets me spend more time with my daughter but requires me to offer her a smaller piece of my attention during the day.
It's not a daycare provider parking her in front of the screen; it's her mother, the same lady who curls up on the couch for a solid hour in the afternoon, reading Make Way for Ducklings and Goodnight Moon. It's the same woman who spends bath time giving voices to the rubber duckies and spelling with foam letters on the wall. It's her mother, who will kiss her goodnight and tell her she's the smartest and most beautiful girl in the world, and that yes, she can watch Elmo in Grouchland in the morning."
ARE YOU KIDDING LADY? I would rather see your child with the NANNY who has a degree in Early Childhood Eduction instead of her YOU! GO TAKE A FEW BRAIN DEVELOPMENT CLASSES for infancy through toddler and tell me what the TV is doing on in the first place?!
How about an art project, a hike, dramatic play, a trip to the museum, the aquarium, the bookstore, the beach, outside physical activities, language arts games, board games, scavenger hunt, trip to the firehouse, the police station, create and obstacle course... ANYTHING that has to do with Teaching!! Every moment is an opportunity to teach your child something!! There are so many other creative ideas to utilize your children's time!
Keep looking on our blog and there will be NO excuse to put your child in front of a Television EVER!!

I completely agree with you Dara! A nanny is a parent's gift to their child when they can not give themselves. What are they learning from TV? nothing! Parent's that do this to their children are only thinking of themselves. That woman's attitude is really disgusting and people shouldn't have children if they are going to sit them in front of the TV all day. Grandma would be a better option- even though she spoils them rotten, she would still stimulate them better than a TV! A good nanny is equipped with the tools to give your child the best days of their childhood.
